Inaugural Caribbean Games T&T 2009
Inaugural Caribbean Games, due to be staged in Trinidad and Tobago from July 13 to 19, will cost US$5.66 million.

The countdown for the Games began on Sunday, and in just under a year's time, fans will get the opportunity to see some of the Caribbean's elite athletes in action on home soil.

Members of the Local Organising Committee, which is being led by chief executive officer Francis Williams-Smith, launched an interactive website (www.caribbeangames2009.com) for fans to follow.

The website will allow fans to access information concerning daily results, history, a guide to the venues, and general information about each of the islands taking part in the inaugural competition.

The Games, which are being sponsored by the Trinidad and Tobago government, is expected to be of a similar high standard as those internationally and will be featuring some of the world's top athletes.

The Caribbean Games will feature the region's elites and arrangements are well on the way to secure these athletes next year.

Organisers have already gotten approval to use Jamaican sprint ace Usain Bolt to market and promote the championship and a number of others are expected to be utilised.

At Sunday's launch at the Lystra Lewis Facility at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, it was also announced that athletes will be required to meet qualifying times set by the CANOC.

The Caribbean Games will comprise competition in five disciplines – netball, athletics, volleyball (beach and indoor), boxing, and tennis.

Athletics will take place at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, while volleyball action is carded for the University of the West Indies Sports and Physical Education Centre (UWI-Spec) St Augustine Campus, as well as at Saith Park, Chaguanas. (CMC)
